URBAN East Kingston replaces the sugar region of rural St Mary for this year's A St Mary Mi Come From (Come To Town) which takes place November 10 at the National Arena. There is no change, however, to the show's theme of benevolence.
A St Mary Mi Come From (Come To Town) was officially launched on Wednesday at Louise Bennett Garden Theatre in Kingston. Conceptualiser Capleton and his manager Claudette Kemp, outlined plans for next month's event.
Rain, which has affected the show over the years, forced promoters to move to Kingston and an indoor venue. Though smaller than its previous home, the Grays Inn Sports Complex in Annotto Bay, St Mary, Kemp said the National Arena promises less hassle for her team.
“The overhead costs in St Mary are very high, especially when it comes to security. We don't have to worry about people coming through the fence, things like that, because the Arena is more secure,” she told Jamaica Observer's Splash.
Capleton, who hails from Islington in St Mary, was one of the acts who gave brief performances at the launch. Ffurious and Av&nte, who will perform on next month's gig, also took the stage.
According to Kemp, Capleton had special consideration for diehard fans of A St Mary Mi Come From when putting together the show.
“We are looking to make the ticket prices as reasonable as possible, and we want to see a much better production than previous years,” she said.
A St Mary Mi Come From was first held in 2000 at Clements Park to assist schools and infirmaries in St Mary and neighbouring parishes. It has attracted many of Capleton's entertainment colleagues and in 2016 earned him the Social Development Commission's Entertainment Award of Excellence for outstanding contribution in community development.
This year his alma mater, Horace Clarke High School (formerly Islington High School), Clonmel High School, Annotto Bay Hospital and the Maxfield Park Children's Home in Kingston are among the beneficiaries of A St Mary Mi Come From (Come To Town).
Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel, Gyptian, Ky-Mani Marley, Bugle, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer have also been confirmed for the show.
