Cardenas rides 5-timer to close gap in jockey's championship

Former champion jockey Dick Cardenas has brought a new level of excitement into the race for this year's jockey's championship at Caymanas Park with one of his most successful days in the saddle since he started riding in Jamaica in 2008. The 2011 champion booted home a sparkling 5-timer, having won races 5 through to 9, to cut Anthony Thomas' lead in the jockey's championship to just 11 wins.

Cardenas also won aboard Tricky One, Mr Pantheon, It's A Rap and Hologram Shadow which closed out his 5-timer.

He was denied a 6-timer after his mount Necromancer which passed the post first in the 10th and final event was subsequently disqualified for causing interference and intimidation.

Cardenas' windfall takes his tally for the season to 66 wins, just 11 behind leading rider Anthony Thomas who sat out the last day of a three day suspension. Thomas led Cardenas by as many as 27 wins up to early August.
