Five star generals! ... JC outlast STATHS to win historic Manning Cup title

Jamaica College (JC) secured their fifth-straight hold on the ISSA/Flow Manning Cup after an exciting 5-3 penalty shootout victory over St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) in the final at the National Stadium last evening.

Shaniel Thomas scored for JC in the 30th minute. However, David Smith netted the equaliser for STATHS in the 40th minute in what was a closely contested contest.

JC, the first champions in 1914, have won the Manning Cup title more times than any other school. The Old Hope Road-based school now has 26 titles, four more than St George's College, while Kingston College are next with 14 titles.

Tyreek Magee, Norman Campbell, Tevin Rochester, Shaniel Thomas and Maliek Howell were the scores for JC in the shootout, while Marc Chambers missed for STATHS.

STATHS started brightly and showed a lot of attacking intent, but it was JC who dominated the early exchanges in the first half as they came close to scoring in the 18th minute through Tyreek Magee's 30-yard free kick, which was spectacularly saved by highly touted STATHS goalkeeper Jeadine White.

Saqlain Waul also came close to scoring for JC eight minutes later, but his powerful effort from 12 yards out was also brilliantly saved by White, who dove to his right to turn the ball behind for a corner kick.

The Dark Blues were finally rewarded for their dominance when Thomas arrived in the centre of the 18-yard box to fire home a splitting through pass from Tevin Rochester past White.

However, Smith pulled STATHS level when he toe-poked the ball into the back of the net after JC failed to clear their line from a corner.

Like they did in the first half, JC also dominated the second stanza, but they were kept at bay due to excellent goalkeeping from White.

In fact, White came to the rescue for STATHS in the 82nd minute, when he did brilliantly to block JC's Tyrese Locke point-blank effort.
