The Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce/Hugh Senior Run/Walk event which had its inception in the Waterhouse community of Olympic Gardens earlier this year, in conjunction with the area's member of Parliament, has provided 10 scholarships for students from the community.
The awards were presented at the Hugh Senior Scholarship Awards ceremony at Penwood Church of Christ, Penwood Road, Waterhouse, Kingston 11, on Sunday last.
The happy students along with pleased and thankful parents were on hand to welcome the cash grant to start the new school year. The grants offered were raised from a 5K run/walk Fraser-Pryce hosted on April 14, 2018, in honour of Pastor Hugh Senior, who died in June 2018. The 5K event was the first ever such event to be staged within the community, and received very favourable response as a seminal effort initiated by Olympian Fraser-Pryce.
“I speak with two different emotions; one of happiness for these kids, and one of sadness of the passing of a great man of vision. Growing up in this church, I have always seen the efforts of Pastor Senior reaching out to help the less fortunate kids, and trying to ensure they get the basic opportunity of attending primary, high school or college. Under the umbrella of this church, many outreach activities have been established to help uplift community members. I will host this race annually to honour his name and help those among us along the way toward achieving their goals”, Fraser-Pryce promised.
The total scholarship grant is $485,000 and beneficiaries include 18-year-old Breint Dacosta who will attend the University of Technology, Jamaica with an award of $150,000 that was made possible by the Member of Parliament Anthony Hylton.
High school grants of $45,000 each will go to Andre Mason, Christina Hanson, Alaine McIntosh, Kayla McDonald and Amalie Thompson. Meanwhile, Cameron Miller, Makeba Haughton and Dania Taylor will each receive a grant of $30,000 to attend a primary school, while a grant of $20,000 will go to Antoine Scott to attend an early childhood institution.
The second staging of this SFP/Hugh Senior 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019, on a route designated in the community.
