BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — A 40-year-old Jamaican was jailed for 12 months after he failed to pay a fine of BDS$4,000 (One Barbados dollar=US$0.50 cents) forthwith on drug-related charges.
Deorian Orlando Duhaney pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking cannabis, and importation of cannabis.
The court heard that the Jamaican had arrived here on January 26 from Kingston, via Trinidad and, after clearing immigration, he was interviewed by police and then referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he passed out 47 taped packages containing cannabis.
The drugs weighed 0.5 pounds and have an estimated street value of BDS$2,000.
Duhaney was fined BDS$4,000 forthwith or 12 months in prison for trafficking. The fine was not paid. He was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the remaining offences.
