Artistes get their day in the sun

IN a bid to expose aspiring artistes and build its base among the youth demographic, radio station Suncity 104.9 FM will launch its World Premiere Tuesdays (WPT) series on October 7.

World Premiere Tuesdays is part of the Portmore company's Current Tuesdays format. The station's disc jockeys will dedicate one hour of their respective four-hour shows to songs from upcoming artistes.

According to Suncity chairman, Steve Billings, an internal committee has been established to oversee songs for the top 10 tracks that will make the WPT cut.

"From the songs that we receive each week, our committee will screen all of them for clarity, lyrical content, composition and creativity," Billings explained. "The top 10 will be chosen and those songs will be placed into rotation."

He said the songs will be posted on the Suncity website and social media, where listeners can vote for their favourites. The songs with the most votes automatically earn regular rotation.

Additionally, artistes with songs getting most votes, are to be interviewed on the station. This process will be repeated weekly to allow other songs to be given sufficient airtime.

"We as a station want to play our role in nation-building and exposing the talent that our country has. We feel that this is a meaningful way to make that contribution, and as such, the task will now be on the artistes to produce good songs."

Founded in 2011, Suncity 104.9 FM has its headquarters in Portmore Pines Plaza. It broadcasts in St Catherine, Clarendon, Kingston, St Andrew, St Thomas, and sections of St Ann and Manchester.
