Mayberry Investments is giving the University of the West (UWI) Dental Class of 2021 (Faculty of Medical Sciences) a big boost with their annual theatrical production, Smoker. The brokerage firm recently donated a cheque valued at $300,000 to the project.
Smoker is slated for a September 4 to 9 run at a venue to be announced. All proceeds from the production will go towards the Port Maria Hospital in St Mary.
Anika Jengelley, assistant VP of marketing at Mayberry Investments, said the company is happy to be able to assist the cause, and took the opportunity to wish the class every success with its production.
“We have supported this initiative of the third-year medical, dental and nursing students in the past, as we believe in their objective of helping to shape the environments in which they will live and work in the near future,” she noted. Smoker is said to be a highly anticipated event that attracts over 2,000 patrons annually, including students from all levels, friends, family, and members of corporate Jamaica.”
Smoker is an annual tradition in which third-year medical and dental students work together to conceptualise, direct, produce and display a theatrical production to the public, all in the name of charity.
The UWI Dental Class is aiming at raise $4 million for Port Maria Hospital.
Over the last 60 years, the class has assisted towards the purchase of medical machinery and equipment as well as renovating various hospitals across the island.
Mica Cunningham, class president and Smoker sponsorship manager, said based on the needs demonstrated by the Port Maria Hospital — such as a PTT machine, cardiac monitor, defibrillator and perimeter fencing for the premises — the Class of 2021 thought that it would be most fitting to receive the funds raised from Smoker 2018.
“This year is especially significant, as it commemorates the 70th year since the inception of The UWI and its first faculty, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, in 1948,” said Cunningham.
“The beauty of the Smoker project is that each year there is a new set of students who come together to produce this life-changing production. The ideas and the creativity that come forward may be vastly different; however, it turns out to be amazing,” she said.
