Najeeb Haber to defend Tony Kelly Skeet title

The Tony Kelly Skeet Classic's defending champion Najeeb Haber is looking forward to taking the course at the Jamaica Skeet Club today at 3 p.m. Even though he says that skeet is very precise and hard to win, he hopes to be the first shooter to defend his championship in this tournament.

Haber, who has been a skeet shooter since 1987, nabbed his first 'highest-overall' champion-ship trophy last year at the Jamaica Skeet Club in Portmore. He said then, "It feels really good to be the highest-overall winner for the first time ever. The tournament was very competitive. I won by only one point. Skeet requires a lot of concentration to do well and so the win feels really good. I competed against Tony Kelly back in the day and so it feels really good to win a tournament named after him."

Haber won with a score of 97 ahead of Brett Thwaites, who shot 96 to take the runner-up spot.

Other shooters to look out for on the course today include nine-time national shotgun champion Ian Banks, six-time national champion Shaun Barnes and two-time national champion Christian Sasso.

The shooters will compete in classes A to E, Hunters or Beginners and Ladies.

second, and many-time ladies champion Marguerite Harris had to settle for third spot.

One notable junior shooter to look out for is Roman Tavares-Finson who topped several classes earlier this year to be the youngest shooter - at 14 years old - to make A Class. In 2017, he shot 92 to win the C Class.

The Tony Kelly Skeet Classic is organised and staged by the Jamaica Skeet Club and is sponsored by JP Foods.

The Tony Kelly Skeet Classic tournament started in 2016 and is held annually to commemorate the life of Jamaica Skeet Club founder Tony Kelly. The club was founded in 1961 and Kelly died in 2015. Haber played with Kelly for many years.
