Police allegedly shot by colleague in Portland

A police corporal who was securing one of the exits of a house where a police search party had gone in search of wanted men was yesterday shot in the head, allegedly by one of his colleagues.

Members of the Operations Support Team in Portland, which carries out special emergency operations in the police division, went in search of wanted men, who were believed to be occupying a property inside the Olivere Housing Scheme in Buff Bay, around 5:45 a.m. yesterday.

According to the report, the injured cop opened a side door and an explosion was heard.

Other police personnel, who ran to investigate after hearing their colleague cry out in pain, found him lying on the floor and covered in blood inside the house.

It was determined that the constable was bleeding from the head. A single shot was allegedly fired by a district constable. It is thought to have ricocheted off a wall, hitting the corporal in the eye.

The corporal, who lost consciousness, was rushed to the Annotto Bay Hospital and later transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital.

The target of the operation was not found at the house, by the police said "it does not mean that the intelligence was not reliable".

The Independent Commission of Investigations and the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Inspectorate of the Constabulary have launched an investigation into the matter.
